During the publishing of this book, the tragedy of the Indian Ocean Tsunami has claimed more than 150,000 lives. People and countries all over the world contributed in every way they could for the relief of those who survived. I salute these generous people and nations as the heroes of our times.
When I was in primary school, I was always fascinated by heroes. Whenever I read books about heroes, I would be engaged for hours. I was interested in anything to do with heroes. All my friends dreamed of becoming heroes one day. As I entered secondary school, my passion for heroes and their battles of good against evil began to fade. However, when I read the trilogy, he Lord of the Rings?by J. R. Tolkien, I was once again intrigued by the heroes and the way they struggled and fought to bring evil to its knees. The impression only deepened after I watched the movie.
In my Year 8 English class, I had a chance to write my own story based on a team of warriors trying to save their city from destruction. I did not hesitate to put my enthusiasm down onto paper. As I wrote my story, I was attracted by the boundless imagination that a novelist can enjoy. Though my story was not a book, I had written a long essay before I brought the fantasy to a halt.
Last year, I had the opportunity to choose my own personal project as part of the course requirement of the International Baccalaureate Middle Year Program (IBMYP). I grasped this opportunity, and took the challenge of writing a fiction about heroes for younger children and to have it published and distributed.
Since the writing of the novel is for the exploration of my fantasy and for challenging my limits rather than for financial gain, I have taken the advice of my parents that proceeds from the sales of this book should go to those who are in need of a helping hand.
Three months before the publication of this book, I did a week of volunteer work for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), a non-profit organization which assists communities worldwide by sending their volunteer doctors, nurses and administrative personnel to help underprivileged people regardless of race, creed or beliefs. I believe this is a way to show the true spirit of my story.
I am honored to obtain their approval to have the net royalty income from the sale of this book donated to their organization. Though the sum may be small, I am very delighted that I can be part of their charitable work.
Writing this book has taken a lot of my time and I have to admit that it somewhat indiscriminately affected my other disciplines of studies, not to mention the computer playtime missed during mid-term break. However, the gain was two-fold: one was the knowledge I gained on how the world of publishing works and another was the satisfaction of seeing my younger brother enjoyed my work and his excitement in recounting the story.
