Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835 - 1910) is one of the most popular American writers of the 19th century. He had to leave school at the age of 13 to work as a printer. In his leisure time, he wrote stories for a local newspaper. At the age of 20, he began to work on a boat which sailed up and down the Mississippi River. It was there that he met the characters he describes in his books. Many of his stories are about his journeys on the Mississippi.

His best-known stories, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are full of excitement and adventures that have delighted boys and girls all over the world.
