The Roman Empire has not been under the power of one single ruler until Julius Caesar, the general who expanded the Roman Empire. His enthronement as a dictator soon follows upon his return from the conquest. His dictatorship eventually leads to the assassination plot against him by the Senate. Julius Caesar is one of the few plays by Shakespeare that was based on historical fact and depicts to a large extent characters apart from Caesar himself, bringing history back to life.
