The deep sea is the lowest layer in the ocean, below the thermocline but above the seabed, at a depth of 1800 metres or more. Little or no light is able to penetrate this part of the ocean. Most of the organisms that live in this region rely on the falling organic matter produced in the photic zone for subsistence.
