The Horseshoe Crab is a type of marine arthropod that lives in the muddy flats and sandy bottoms of shallow coastal waters. There are only four living species of horseshoe crabs today. Three species are only found in Asia and one species in North America. Although horseshoe crabs are arthropods, they are not classified as crustaceans. It means that a horseshoe crab is not a crab. Horseshoe crabs belong to the Chelicerata family, along with arachnids such as spiders, scorpions and ticks.
