Christmas Island lies in the Indian Ocean about 1,500 km west of the Australian mainland and 2,600 km from Perth in Western Australia. The island is part of Australian territory with a population of about 2,000 inhabitants. Its nearest neighbour is Indonesia which lies to its northwest.
