In my boyhood, travelling around the world is not included in my wish. After a chance of budget travelling to Mainland China, I couldn't stop loving in travelling. Counting from the world's seven ancient ruins to the three greatest falls, my dreams come true one by one. So far, "What do I ever love?" I asked.
Having been to Kenya and South Africa for wildlife safari, Argentina and New Zealand for whale watching, together with my twenty years' interests of hiking, I indeed realized that my favourite is the nature and wildlife.
Antarctica is so remote and impalpable. Antarctica, in many people's mind, is cold, desolation and white. Whereas, Antarctica is many travellers' dream place. Never in my life join guided tour, plus I have to travel in the most budget-saving way, visiting Antarctica is a brainteaser to me.
Remembering that when I was in South America in 1999, for collecting Antarctica information, I went to Ushuaia, which is the southernmost city in the world. I looked for the method of entering Antarctica. When back home, I sent emails to ask prices and itineraries. Having read the only detailed travel guidebook published by Lonely Planet at that time (and even now), I changed my habit. I am willing to spend and join a guided tour finally.
In no time, I have been to Antarctica for four times. Every time I shared with friends and gave travel seminars, the questions were almost, "Is there very cold? Any other means to save money? What tour operators?" I had organized seminar after each trip for sharing experiences about this last clean place on earth, in what kinds of manner to visit and about what kinds of tour operators to join.
I had never advised people to join guided tour, but Antarctica is an exception. Antarctica tours will not have fixed visiting points and shopping time, all depend on the nature. Are they expensive? It is true for the stated price, but it shall see what attitude you hold, whether you like to enjoy and learn.
Why I go to Antarctica once and again? I always reply the journalists this question in the interview, "Will you think that you have visited the whole Europe after visiting Paris?" Antarctica is a continent, not a city nor a point. She is larger than Europe and Australia. Her area is 14 million km2, so large that many people cannot imagine. The area of her broken floating iceberg is greater than that of Belgium, while the area of Ross Ice Shelf is even bigger than that of France! Geographically, Antarctica is the highest continent in the world, 2,250 metres high. Ice coverage is up to 90% there. She is also the world's lowest temperature record holder, with temperature at -89.6 C and with 320km/h wind speed!
Why I still go there? It is meaningful as Antarctica is not owned by any nations, and there is no human habitation except scientists. Most of the visitors are accommodated in the vessels. Antarctica has no border and least human population. She becomes the heaven of scientists. Every time she brings me excitement, which exceeds my imagination.
My friend made joke on me that my trip to Antarctica is like back home. Yes, I can really find my joy, feel my familiarity and enjoy my favourite place. Every time when standing on the deck and enjoying the icebergs, I would be calmed by the tranquil sea. Every time when looking at the penguins busy walking to their nests from the sea, I would ask, "Are they not my familiar citizen?" When I was excited by the Humpback whale, which was ejecting water, swimming, wagging tail, I would ask, "How tiny is the mankind in the nature?"
Remembering that the wildlife series programme actor of the BBC, David Attenborough, had mentioned at the end of a programme roughly, "It's lucky that I have visited different countries for different cultures and various magnificient natural environments. Meanwhile, human activities, pollution and destruction are continuously making the nature imbalance. I hope the beauty that I saw and everything in the nature are not owned by me, but they can last long, and can be seen by the next generation." This also represents my thinking!
Wishing that the relationship between Antarctica and human being expressed by this book can bring you the ghost of an illumination, and a new goal in life!
